The territory known as Lomellina is defined by the rivers Sesia, Ticino and Po
and is of very ancient origins; originally a swamp reclaimed by the Cistercians
monks, becomes in 1500 a fertile territory for rice growing, which, thanks to
the abundance of water in the territory, becomes one of the main activities of
the area. Country of great richness and historical importance, from Vigevano
to Mortara, as well as in all other centres of Lomellina, hosts wonderful art
masterpieces; castles and fortifications, then turned into residences, prove
the strategic value of these lands.

1)
Vigevano ,the Sforzesca and the Mill of Mora Bassa
|
|
Vigevano
Vigevano is the most imposing fortified complex of Lomellina, an important economic
centre of the area.
Piazza Ducale and the Cathedral
The Piazza Ducale
is rectangular and is considered one of the most beautiful
squares in Italy. Wanted by Ludwig the Brown and started
in 1493, probably on the design of an architect from
the Bramante school, or probably a from the laboratory
of Leonardo da Vinci, is closed on one side of the
curious concave façade
of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral, built on the pre-existing
Temple of Sant'Ambrogio, conserves, in its interior,
masterpieces attributed to Macrino d'Alba and to Bernardino
Ferrari, and the Museum of the Cathedral’s Tresure,
hosting a collection of interesting tapestries from
Vigevano and the Flanders, of precious missals decorated
with miniatures and objects of sacred jewellery from
the XV and the XVI centuries.
The Bramante tower
From the Bramante tower, newly
erected by Ludwig the Brown, who created the main entrance
of the castle, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama
on the entire city ; the project of re-building the
tower at the end of the Fifteenth century is attributed
to Donato Bramante.
The Castle of Vigevano
The Castle, started by Luchino
Visconti, and turned by the Sforza into a duke residence
in the XV sec. looks like a Palace melted with the
Piazza Ducale. Like a small city in the city, the Castle,
with the Duke Palace, the three stables, the Falconiera
and the Dame’s Loggia, is one of the greatest
fortified complexes in Europe; the ensemble of buildings
included in the palace could, in fact, contain six
times the Cathedral of Milan.
Worth a visit is the hanging street
called Strada Coperta (covered street) , links the
castle with the Old Fortress.
The Shoes and Shoe industry techniques
Museum
The
Shoes and Shoe industry techniques Museum, located
in the ancient stables of the Castle, leads the visitor
through the history and the evolution of the Shoe.
The Museum, the only one in Italy, conserves many curious
items that, sorted per thematic sections, as "historical
items, "Shoes from the world", "Shoes
belonging to famous people", and so on, make the
visit to the Museum unique.
The
Sforzesca
The Sforzesca, a wonderful hunting residence
and farm wanted by Ludwig the Brown, is located not
far away from Vigevano.
Built in the second half of the
Fifteenth century on the project of Guglielmo da Camino,
the Sforzesca is an example of "closed court" building
and presents a squared plan with big structures made
for residence purposes.
Mill
of Mora Bassa
The Fifteenth century wonderful
house called "Mill
of Mora Bassa" or "Mill of Leonardo",
was a wedding present of Ludwig the Brown to his wife
Beratrice d'Este. It conserves different systems of
mouths for water canalization: the Magisterial Mouth
of Milan attributed to Leonardo, the American Mouth,
The Mouth Cavour and the Slump Mouth.
The Mill hosts
today the Eco-museum
of Mora Bassa.
The Eco-museum,
based around the ancient mill, originated from a proposal
of the Association irrigua Est Sesia; its goal is to
rediscover the territory of Lomellina and the complex
system of reception, measuring and distribution of
waters, which has modelled the landscape and the local
agricultural and ecologic system.
The Eco-museum, inaugurated in summer 2001 and articulated
in an itinerary-workshop along the river bank, illustrates
the study of traditional measuring systems of water.
The Eco-museum works also as a documentation centre
of the irrigation system of rice-cultivated lands and
disposes also of spaces for congresses.
Still in the
Mill, from September 2000, you can visit the Permanent
Exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci and the functioning
machinery. The exhibition is situated in an Leonardesque
itinerary going from the Vinci museum, to Amboise,
the place where Leonardo spent the last years of his
life; in this itinerary, Vigevano is a new, but fundamental
step for those who are looking for Leonardesque places.

2) Gambolò and Scaldasole
|
Gambolò
Gambolò is associated with a Roman
camp built, according to the tradition, by Publius Cornelius
Scipio at the era of the first victories of Hannibal.
Its Roman origins are evident from some structures that
have been preserved until now, as the central square,
three of the forum original doors, the external ring
and a part of the ditch.
The castle and the Church of
Sant'Eusebio are two of the most interesting places you
can visit in Gambolò.
The castle of Gambolò
The castle is featured mostly
by the wonderful portal in Baroque style that still conserves
the panels showing the inscription carved by the dynasty
that carried out the construction works. The Seventh century
hall of the Palace hosts the Archaeological Museum Lomellino
where is possible to find interesting evidence of the man
presence in Lomellina from 5500 to 25 b.C.
The Castle of
Scaldasole
The name of Scaldasole appears for the fist time
in documents dating back to 982, where already emerges
the existence of the castle.
The monumental complex of Scaldasole
is one of the most important of the Pavia province and
is composed by a castle and a ricetto. Already existing
in the Longobard era, then rebuilt between the XII and
the XIII centuries, then turned, at the beginning of the
Fifteenth century, by the family Folperti in the actual
form, the complex has a squared from and conserves the
ricetto, with long walkways and embattled towers, with
the real fortress that, turned into a noble residence,
includes the ancient tower used as a remaining defence
of the entire building. In the XV century, under the Malaspina
family, the castle hosts illustrious people like Isabelle
of Aragona, the emperor Maximilian of Austria and the emperor
Charles V.
One hall of the castle is reserved for the Antonio
Strada archaeological collection, comprising items of
different kind and periods, going from the Neolithic
to the Longobard period. Materials ,belonging basically
to funeral contests, were found in Lomellina between
the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX.
In
the area of the Complex you can also visit the farm next
to the castle, built between the end of the XVIII century
and the beginning of the XX, according to the traditional “closed
court” model.
The small wood of Scaldasole
Not so
far away from the centre of Scaldasole you can find the
natural reserve that owes its importance to two factors:
it’s one of the few forest zones of Lomellina and
it occupies a sandy hillock. The wood is composed mostly
by robinias and bushes, by the farnia, by some species
of white poplar, oaks and pines. The few present vegetation
species reflect the poverty typical of woods on hillocks
that, for their geological structure, are dry environments.
The woods are ideal habitats for herons, wood-pigeons,
turtle-dove, river nightingales, blackcaps, pheasants,
starlings, grey crows , owls and red woodpeckers. Other
species are numerous wild rabbits and foxes, and sometimes
stork also nest in this area when they stop during their
long migration journey.

3)
Mortara and the Museum of Art and Peasant Tradition in Olevano di Lomellina
|
|
The environment of the calm municipality of Mortara,
located in the centre of Lomellina between the fields
and the rice cultivated areas, is great for bike riding.
Conquered in 1706 by the Savoia, it has been the main
city of the Lomellina province until the unification
of Italy. The city offers some beautiful Churches, among
them the ancient Abbey of Sant'Albino and the Sanctuary
of Santa Maria del Campo.
The Abbey of Sant' Albino
The Abbey is located at the
edge of the city along the state street 494, in the place
that, according to the tradition, in 773, has been theatre
of the cruel battle between the franc army of Charles
the Great and the Longobards guided by their King Desiderio.
In the crowd that caused the defeat of the Longobards
and also a great number of dead, fell two supporters
of Charles the Great, Amelio of Alvernia and Amico of
Beyre, whose death inspired many French heroic songs.
Sanctuary
of Santa Maria del Campo
At approximately
2 km West from Mortara, next to the street to Novara,
is located, at the end of a square in the country village
centre, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Campo, that
takes the name from it. Some documents certify its existence
from 1145; from the original office we have just a few
traces in the columns of the tiburium and, in some stretches,
of the masonry works. The façade
repeats the Longobard-Gothic lines of the Hall Churches,
typical of the Lomellina area.
The Museum of Art
and Peasant Tradition
Olevano di Lomellina
is a small municipality between the rivers Po, Sesia
and Ticino, and is , since always, linked with agriculture;
In Olevano, in fact, is located the Museum of Art and
Peasant Tradition. The Museum is hosted in an old group
of houses and collects 500 tools, utensils and agricultural
machines used until a few decades ago in Lomellina.

4)
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Baptistry of San Giovanni ad Fontes
in Lomello and the Castle of Tortorolo a Mede
|
Lomello and Mede Lomellina are two of the many places
rich of history and art you can visit in Lomellina; the
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Baptistry of San
Giovanni ad Fontes and the castle of Tortorolo are some
of the most fascinating places of these areas.
The Basilica
of Santa Maria Maggiore
The Basilica, which
has a relevant scenographic development, was built between
1025 and 1040 on the rests of the preceding Longobard
constructions, in which was probably celebrated the marriage
of queen Teodolinda and the Duke Agilulfo. According
to an old legend, that gave the Church the name of " Devil’s
Church", Santa Maria
Maggiore would have been destroyed by the evil and rebuilt
by the devil itself in only one night, but left incomplete
because of the sound of the morning , which, after announcing
the sunrise forced him to flee.
The Church has a basilica
plant and three asymmetrical naves ; the asymmetry of
the plant is such that the position of the pilasters
on one side does not correspond to the position of the
other side and that big traverse arch, on the central
nave are not running parallel. These supported the original
wooden covering of the central nave, whereas in the lateral
naves there is already a cruiser vault, typical of the
Lombard Romanesque style (The Basilica is a good example
of this style).
The interior, restored
in the Fifties, is illuminated by small windows with
arch and, under the apses, there is a crypt of modest
structure, probably the crypt of the pre-existing Church
that maybe hosted the marriage between Teodolinda and
Agilulfo.
The Baptistery of San
Giovanni ad Fontes
The Baptistery
of S.Giovanni ad Fontes, erected between the V and the
VI century, rebuilt in the VIII century in the upper
part, is one of the most ancient Lombard Baptisteries.
The Baptistery is built by a central octagonal body on
which are based four rectangular niches, alternated to
others in the form of an horse iron; on the dome there
are eight windows and, in the middle of the roof there
is a small lantern decorated by mullioned windows with
one and two lights.
The interior hosts the ancient baptismal
basin in the form of an irregular hexagon. It served,
probably, for an baptismal rite abandoned in Italy since
the VI century.
The castle of Tortorolo
The castle of Tortorolo is
a house-fort of the XIV century and, like many other
in the Pavia province, has the external side decorated
by a triple frieze in bricks. The exterior, surrounded
by a ditch, presents a tower with a special grooving
for the elevator of the drawbridge and the interior hosts
a squared court with porticoes disposed on three sides.

The Lomellina’s cookery is made of simple dishes,
prepared with ingredients offered by the Lombard fields
and breeding; is higly original, tasty and nutritious;
made of solid and vigorous flavours.
Among the most simple
and tasty dishes is well-known the salad of beans widely
cultivated in the past. Then come the first dishes: rice;
polenta; breadcrumps soup (once traditional Easter dinner);
and frogs: fried, stewed, in the omelette or in the soup.
Frogs and snails are indeed the main ingredients of the
most traditionnal Lomellina’s
dishes. The local specialities vary from the goose ham
to the Mortara’s goose salami, to taste with the
delicious fat liver pâté. Last but not least
the sweetmeat: are worth to be tasted the “Baci di
dama”, rice biscuits, “Bramantini” of
Vigevano and the "dolce del Moro" (Moor’s
sweet), which receipt comes from the Ludovic the Moor age;
during the Carnival are always cooked pancakes and “bugie”.
These
dishes are perfectly matched with the wide choice of Oltrepò Pavese
wines.
Il tutto da gustare con la vasta gamma dei vini
dell’Oltrepò Pavese.

Palio
The “Palio” (horse race) takes place
in the castle of Vigevano and in its occasion is organised
a sumptuous historic procession recalling the Sforza’s
days splendour.
Mortara, the last Sunday of September,
Goose Palio
In
the Goose “Palio” participate seven city “contradas” (districts).
That is the game with human pawns, similar to the famous “Goose

The Vigevano’s hydroelectric power
plant uses for its alimentation the part of Ticino’s
waters. The plant is located in Ticino’s National Park
and composed from two separated plants: an old station dated
from 1904 and the new one constructed in 1994. In 2004 the
convention with Lombard Park of Ticino’s Valley Autority
have been singned. The convention stipulates the opening to
public of towpath along the canal leading to the plant. (That
is a cycle path 1.700 meters long). |

The Path along the Ticino River:
The National Road 336 for Varallo accrosses the Ticino
River by means of a river dam connected to the Porto della Torre
hydroelectric power plant. This plant is designed at the end
of 50’s for ENEL by Giò Ponti. The path along the
river towards the Maddalena village leads to the Panperduto dam
and to the canals Villoresi e Industriale. The last one aliments
hydrolectric power plants of Vizzola, Tornavento and Turbigo
Superiore.
To get to the plant can be taken the Cycle track realized by
ENEL in collaboration with Ticino National Park Authority. The itinerary passes
by the Cascina Castellana and the Turbigo’s plant up to Vigevano’s
power plant.
