ITINERARIES

The province of Lodi, with its naturalistic and uncontaminated habitats, is the ideal place to spend a relaxing period between nature, good cooking and art. The green colour of nature in the Lodi area is, in fact, constellated by the predominance of red colour created by the old abbeys and castles immerged in green uncontaminated and cultivated areas. Among the many great productions, the zone offers also century of experience in ceramic production , possible to see by visiting artistic laboratories. The Lodi area had its own identity recognised in 1992, when it obtained the status of Province.

1) The Basilica of San Bassiano and the Paradiso Ittic Parc

Lodi Vecchio (Old Lodi)

Basilica of San Bassiano
Just outside the town of Lodi Vecchio (Old Lodi), immerged in green areas and crossed by water streams, you can see the earthenware silhouette of the Basilica of San Bassiano , once Basilica of the XII Apostoles. The Basilica, built in the IV century, developed, thanks to some reconstructions occurred during the Roman and Gothic periods, many interesting aspects. The “wind” façade, typical of the XIV century’s style in the Lombardy region, the particular open air splits looking like mullioned windows with two lights and the interior, embellished with XIV century’s frescoes, are its most significant aspects.
According to the tradition, the Basilica has been founded by San Bassiano himself.

“Paradiso” Ittic Parc
In the small town of Villa Pompeiana, on the Adda South Parc side, you will find the “Paradiso” Ittic Parc. The parc covers a naturalistic area of approximately 1300 hectars of woods, canals and ponds, originated by a dry bed zone of the Adda river and alimented by fountains that keep the temperature at a constant level.
Walking along the water streams or crossing the seven underwater observatories we can admire different species of fishes, typical of the Po plain and exotic.

2) The Abbey of Cerreto and the Abbey of Ospedaletto Lodigiano

The Abbey of Cerreto

The Abbey of Cerreto
In the Area of the Adda South Parc you will find the centre of Abbadia Cerreto, showing the work of the Cistercians monks, who reclaimed these lands already in XII century.
The Abbey of Cerreto, in the Adda South Parc area, is a precious example of Cistercians architecture. The Abbey, built towards the half of the XII century, remained in the hands of the Cistercians monks until this order was suppressed in 1798. The Church, hosting the altar-piece Cesi of Callisto Piazza and other frescoes, is in Lombard Romanesque style and is overlooked by an octagonal tower of the XIV century with windows and mullioned windows with two lights.

Abbey of Ospedaletto Lodigiano
The Abbey of Ospedaletto Lodigiano is dedicated to the Saints Pietro and Paolo and its building was ordered by the founder of the Gerolomines order in 1433. The Church, consecrated in 1599, presents luxurious decorations and a XVIII century façade with a wide balcony supported by a three-arches portico.

3) The Castle of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano and Villa Litta

The Castle of S. Angelo Lodigiano
The Castle, probably erected at the beginning of ‘300, has been the property of a wide series of illustrious people who modified the use purpose and, partly, the aspect of the Castle; from Queen Della Scala, wife of Bernabò Visconti, who built the Master Tower, to Gian Giacomo Morando who, after inheriting the property in 1865, rehabilitated the old forms of the castle with long restoration works.
The Castle of Sant’Angelo is today the most imposing and the better conserved one in the Lodi area and hosts the Lombardy Museum of Agriculture History, the Bread Museum and the Historic Museum “Morando Bolognini”. The Historic Museum, articulated in 27 halls, contains original furniture, armours, documents and art masterpieces of various periods, belonging to the Morando Bolognini collection.
The Lombardy Museum of Agricultural History and the Bread Museum are enriched by items and reconstructions.

Villa Litta
Villa Litta, in the small centre of Orio Litta, is one of the most beautiful Baroque residences in the Southern Po plain; it is decorated internally by stuccoes and frescoes illustrating mythological subjects and externally by terraces and gardens extending in direction of the Po river.

WINES AND GASTRONOMY

The gastronomy of Lodi is originated by the elaboration of farm products; butter is the most frequently used ingredient in typical recipes. Cheese is produced in many forms, like the scrapings, the mascarpone and the pannerone, as good as the very renowned grana lodigiano.

In small taverns and in restaurants it’s possible to taste the omelette with “urtis” (wild asparagus tips), the “risott rugnus” with minced salamella, the polenta with “luganega” (guinea-fowl filled with mascarpone) or the “uselin de scapada”, small delicacies with bacon, liver and sirloin.

The Lodi cake is called tortionata, a rich sandy cake with almonds.

NATURE AND GEOGRAPHY

One of the places of best naturalistic interest in the province is the Adda South Parc.

The second stretch of the Adda River, from Comazzo to its confluence in the Po River, is safeguarded by the Adda South Parc; here, the river presents the characteristic aspect of the plain river: its frequent dry bed zones have created an ideal habitat for the typical fauna of the swamp. The area is almost fully cultivated, particularly along the river banks populated by small precious nucleus of old fluvial vegetation.
