With the aim of reducing proliferation risks due to potential illicit traffics of nuclear material, technology and sensitive knowledge from the vast Former Soviet Union Nuclear Weapons complex mainly concentrated in the 10 Russian Nuclear “Closed Cities”, LNCV has launched an informal, international Forum and coordination structure on Nuclear proliferation expertise named International Working Group (IWG) for Transition Initiatives including the past LNCV proposal of a European Nuclear Cities Initiative (ENCI).
The IWG participants consider it as an evolving think-tank and melting pot of ideas, variable in itself, with the informal and flexible format of its meetings and the possibility of bringing together actors from nearly all the countries involved in the G8 Global Partnership (G8GP) process, allowing a large number of experts dealing with the different components of the G8 GP to meet, exchange ideas, explore state-of-the-art practices, share their experience and tests the acceptance of proposed mechanisms.
