This international workshop expanded upon the two previous workshop held by LNCV in October 2005 and 2006 on South Asia Security and was focused on three main themes:

  • Strategic stability, proliferation challenges and the India-Pakistan comprehensive dialogue
  • South Asia as a “Regional Security Complex”
  • South Asia in the Asian and the Global System

Around 30 international experts, scholars and officials belonging to the LNCV South Asia Network attended the Workshop and discussed the issues above indicated and the case studies presented by Indian and Pakistani experts.

As a natural follow up of this workshop, an international seminar on “Strengthening co-operation and trust in the Hindu Kush region: a role for India and Pakistan” was held in Rome the 2nd of October, organized by the DGAO in collaboration with the SIOI.

The workshop aimed to analize the current security environment: strategic stability and the meaning of nuclear deterrence in the Asiatic sub-continent and the development of Proliferation Prevention Mechanisms and Nuclear Confidence Security Building Measures (NCSBMs) in order to limit the threat related to the potential escalation of the current regional stalemate.
The workshop also focused on the IndiaPakistan comprehensive dialogue, on the Indo-US nuclear agreement and its consequences on the regional scenario  and on the potential role of international organizations, regional and international actors  in the solution of the current Indo-Pakistani impasse

The main aim of this workshop was to analyse the current state of the security environment, strategic stability, regional strategic partnerships and economic development trends in South Asia, as well as  the potential role that Italy, the EU and China (the latter as one of the major regional powers) may play, together with the US and International Organizations, to reduce threats and to favour mutual trust.

 

In particular, the following items have been discussed:

 

  • Security Environment and Strategic Stability in South Asia.
  • International Non-Intrusive and Non-Coercive Initiatives (CTR-like Mechanisms) for Safety and Security Improvement. Development of Regional Security Arrangements for NCSB Measures in South Asia. Bilateral and Multilateral Strategic Partnerships towards India and Pakistan.
  • The Role of International Community and Organizations to Enhance Stability, Economic Development and Cooperation.
