In order to analyse the multidimensional aspects associated with the stability, the regional security relations and current trends of the new Iraq and of the Middle-East, the Landau Network–Centro Volta (LNCV) in collaboration with the Iraqi National Academy of Science of Baghdad, directed by Prof. Hussain al-Shahristani, and with the support of the General Directorate for Mediterranean and Middle-East (GDMM) of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), organized the international Workshop on: The New Iraq. Stabilization, Reconciliation, Institution-Building and the Regional Scenario.
The Workshop aimed to represent a viable opportunity for favouring the process of stabilization of Iraq through a process of national reconciliation involving all the different ethno-religious and cultural communities of that country: during its sessions the representatives of all the Iraqi communities as well as the regional and international experts had the possibility of presenting - and debating in a friendly contest all their points of concerns, their fears for the future, their perceptions of threats and their suggestions for the future.
Due to the relevance of the neighbouring countries’ role for the stabilization of Iraq - and in the line of the so called Sharm el-Sheikh process - the Seminar focused also on the regional scenario and on the necessity of enhancing regional stability in order to reduce the lack of confidence and misperceptions amongst Iraq and its neighbours.
The Workshop represented also a follow up of the LNCV Workshop held in Rome on July 5-6, 2005 on Towards a Multilateral Regional Security Arrangement in the Middle East.
