ANNOUNCEMENT

The International Workshop "Collective phenomena in macroscopic systems" will be held at Villa Olmo, on Lake Como, about 50 km North of Milano. It will start in the morning of Monday December 4th 2006 and end in the afternoon of Wednesday December 6th. This Workshop falls within a long tradition of Workshops and Schools held regularly either in Varenna or in Como (such as the International Symposium "Plasmas in the Laboratory and in the Universe: new insights and new challenges", September 2003).

This particular Workshop aims at recognizing that collective phenomena are at the core of the observed behavior of completely different macroscopic systems (with huge differences in time and length scales), which are usually investigated in separate research fields. The aim of the Workshop is to clarify and emphasize this common link, starting from a small number of selected topics that exhibit an interdisciplinary character. List of topics include Instabilities in fluids, plasmas, and astrophysical systems (such as Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Taylor, Rayleigh-Benard, Reconnection, Magnetorotational and other Plasma instabilities, ....); Landau damping and related phenomena; Structures, patterns, and self-organization, as well as turbulence. Attendance will be limited to 60-70 participants.

The scientific program will focus on the following general research areas:

(1) FLUIDS

(2) PLASMAS

(3) ASTROPHYSICS

The structure of the Workshop is planned to be in the form of three full-day sessions (broadly corresponding to the three areas indicated above), each based on three long papers, four shorter orals and one poster session. The selection of the contributed papers and the division into oral and poster presentations will be made on the basis of a one-page abstract submitted by the participants. The Proceedings will be published by World Scientific.
